PKI Insights Recap - Is Your PKI Healthy? The Essential Guide to Comprehensive Assessments

by Mark B. Cooper

In October’s PKI Insights webinar, we delved deep into the crucial topic of PKI assessments, a subject that has evolved significantly over the last two decades. We highlighted why assessments are more vital than ever, especially as organizations become increasingly reliant on PKI to secure their data, systems, and communications.

Over my 20 years in the PKI space, I’ve seen firsthand how businesses struggle with PKI health issues—often only realizing something’s wrong after experiencing significant disruptions. Our October discussion covered the essentials of what makes a PKI healthy, including the critical aspects of visibility, maturity models, security, resilience, and real-time compliance. These foundational elements can prevent PKI environments from becoming “silent killers” within organizations, waiting to cause downtime or security breaches at the worst possible moments.

We emphasized the importance of a “top-to-bottom review” that provides comprehensive insights into the PKI’s current state. Many organizations still operate under the assumption that if PKI is operational, it’s secure. This couldn’t be further from the truth. As we demonstrated, regular assessments allow organizations to identify vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, and other issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

We took some time to focus on PKI Spotlight, our tool for real-time compliance and visibility, which offers organizations a way to detect issues as they arise rather than months or years later. Real-time monitoring is becoming the standard, enabling security teams to address vulnerabilities proactively rather than relying on annual assessments that might be outdated by the time they’re completed.

The session was packed with practical advice for those ready to take action today, such as establishing baselines and documenting configurations, even without specialized tools. The key takeaway: starting the assessment process, however small, is a step toward a more resilient PKI infrastructure.
